Weddings
Wedding traditions of marriage in Russia are a mixture of old Russian
rituals, traditions of the Soviet period and Western trends. Recently,
more and more often we can see how Western-style weddings are held in
Russia: with on-site registration, without toastmaster, contests,
accordion player, ransom and loaf, but still, most still prefer classic
Russian weddings. In this article, we will take a closer look at how a
traditional Russian wedding takes place.
MODERN RUSSIAN WEDDINGS
Wedding! Yes, every girl has been
dreaming about this event since childhood. After all, this is one of
the main events in her life. This is HER day. A day when all eyes are
on her, when congratulations sound, and her happy laugh.
A wedding is a door to a new life with a loved one. This is a real
fairy tale. When every girl can become a princess, even if only for a
day.
After all, on this day you can afford to wear a luxurious snow-white
dress, and cover your head with a weightless veil - the main symbol of
this celebration! A wedding dress is not just an outfit for another
occasion. No wonder every girl dreams of him as a child. Only the BRIDE
can afford this outfit.
And the celebration itself - the registration of marriage? Oh, these
are indeed the most solemn and important moments in the life of every
girl. Especially when she looks at her beloved and replies: "Yes, I
agree to take him as a husband!" - thereby entrusting him with his
future fate. And when the crown words “I declare you husband and wife”
sound, a new, family life begins.
And how nice it is to feel the weight of the wedding ring on your
finger. And, it would seem, the usual word "wife" is now for her not
just a word, but the status of a married lady.
But the most intriguing moment on this day is the wedding night. And
especially if for a girl this is really the FIRST night spent with her
beloved.
A wedding is a must in every girl's life!
To completely plunge into the fairy-tale world, you can have a wedding
in a real castle, and go to the registry office in a royal carriage.
It is possible, of course, that in the future in her life the girl will
marry more than once. But the first wedding (and for many still the
last) will forever be remembered as an unforgettable, fabulous event.
Our life consists mainly of everyday days, which practically do not
differ from each other, so do not deprive yourself of the joy of making
one of these days fabulous.
A wedding cannot be compared with any holiday, be it New Year or a
birthday. After all, we celebrate a birthday every year, but a wedding
- only once in our lives!
OLD-DAYS WEDDINGS in RUSSIA
Traditional Russian Matchmaking process
In old times, before sending matchmakers
to the bride's house, they were carefully selected. As a rule,
relatives became matchmakers. The main purpose of a matchmaker is to be
an authoritative person in the eyes of others and to know what to say
in a given situation. The peculiarities of weddings in Russia were that
the bride did not know her future spouse before the wedding, and it
depended on the skill of the matchmakers whether the wedding would take
place at all.
There are many signs and traditions, and some of them relate to the
period of preparation for the wedding: this is a traditional
matchmaking, which is now taking the form of a small feast of parents
and newlyweds.
There is also a tradition of pre-wedding parties, separately for males,
and separately for females. According to Russian traditions of old
days, a bachelorette party was held before the wedding day: bridesmaids
gathered there, the bride cried and lamented, said goodbye to girlhood,
untwisted her braid.
As part of the matchmaking, many symbolic rites were performed, some of which are still observed today.
Today, in general, matchmaking is
carried out in a simplified form. Matchmakers do not arrange theatrical
scenes, they sing little and do not say matrimonial jokes. The
groomgives flowers to all the women present in bride's house.
Matchmakers bring fruits, drinks, sweets. The bride receives a valuable
gift from the groom and future father-in-law and mother-in-law.
Bride ransom
Previously, the phrase "bride price" was not a metaphor at all! Indeed,
the bride was redeemed from the parental home. The bride was supposed to be 'won' by groom's wisdom towards this
tradtion. It was usually organized by the bridesmaids, takes place in
the house of the girl's parents and includes numerous contests. By
passing these comtests, the groom proves that he really oves the bride.
During contests groom's friends could come to his aid.
Wedding in Home Affairs
The wedding takes on a new shade after
the official ceremony at the ZAGS (Home Affairs, registry office). Many
modern couples delight themselves and guests in the hall for official
ceremonies not only with the first kiss, but also with the first dance.
After the official part, the guests will have a photo session with the
young. Then the guests stand on both sides of the exit from the ZAGS to
shower the young with rose petals, rice, coins or sweets.
